The last Piast immortalised in gold by Mennica Polska
Casimir III the Great – the last monarch of the Piast dynasty – has been honoured with a special commemoration. Mennica Polska, which has been preserving the national heritage for years, has marked the 693rd anniversary of this ruler’s coronation by issuing a gold medal. Only 100 copies have been produced, each struck from one ounce of pure gold of the highest fineness.
The gold medal bearing the image of Casimir III the Great was created as a symbol of pride and a tribute to Polish roots. The medal evokes the majesty of the king’s reign and the enduring legacy he left behind. The reverse features a dignified portrait of the monarch wearing a crown and a richly decorated cloak. The obverse, meanwhile, is adorned with a stylised White Eagle, a symbol of sovereignty and the continuity of Polish statehood, set within an ornamental composition inspired by the legacy of the Piast dynasty.
– Casimir III the Great went down in Polish history as a ruler who strengthened the country’s borders, organised the legal system, supported trade and urban development, and invested in the construction of castles and defensive walls. It was precisely these actions that ensured his name became permanently associated with a period of intense national development. Mennica Polska’s medal dedicated to this king is a symbolic tale of the enduring nature of statehood, responsibility and the power of historical heritage encapsulated in gold – said Rafał Hendel, Acting Marketing Director at Mennica Polska.
The design was inspired both by historical accounts of Casimir the Great’s reign and by the memory of his achievements, preserved in Polish tradition and chronicles. Jan Długosz wrote of the king that “he shone with the radiance of virtues, particularly justice and moderation”, emphasising the respect he enjoyed not only within his kingdom but also beyond its borders.
The medal depicting Casimir the Great represents the Mennica Polska’s long-standing mission to preserve the memory of key figures in Polish history, and thereby to nurture the national heritage. To date, Mennica Polska has produced coins featuring the images of Bolesław Chrobry, Casimir I the Restorer and Władysław Łokietek, as well as original talars and ducats depicting Kazimierz Pułaski, Józef Bem and Fryderyk Chopin.
