A new ticket system in Warsaw will be developed in cooperation with the Mint of Poland – the agreement has been signed
After nearly 30 years, the capital city will change the way passengers pay for public transport. The new Warsaw Ticket System will be introduced in 2027. Today, The Mint of Poland signed an agreement with the Warsaw Public Transport Authority to implement this project.
– In two years' time, we will provide passengers with a modern, simple, and intuitive payment system for travel on Warsaw Public Transport. The new ticket system will enable quick and convenient payment for tickets, optimise travel costs and adjust prices to the actual use of transport. This will provide passengers with greater flexibility and convenience – said Tomasz Mencina, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw.
The Mint of Poland was selected as the contractor for the new system through a competitive dialogue.
– We have a huge task and a lot of work ahead of us. The preparation of the system will take two years. Such a large project requires precise planning, design, programming, and testing. All this to ensure that everything works flawlessly after the system is launched – said Katarzyna Strzegowska, Director of ZTM Warsaw.
The Mint of Poland's strong position in the implementation of modern ticketing systems is confirmed by its experience in cooperation with the largest cities in Poland.
– We have years of experience behind us, which allows us to respond to well-identified passenger needs in a comprehensive manner – from expanding payment options for public transport, through increasing the convenience of purchasing single and season tickets, to ensuring maximum transaction security and eliminating the need to print paper tickets, with care for the environment – summarized Katarzyna Budnicka-Filipiuk, President of the Management Board of the Mint of Poland.
During the work on the new project, a completely new passenger portal, application, central system, and travel planner must be created. It will also be necessary to produce 13,000 new devices for recording fare payments.
– From 2027, passengers of Warsaw Public Transport will be able to easily and quickly pay for their journeys and take care of all matters related to public transport without leaving their homes – explained Katarzyna Strzegowska.
Passengers will be able to purchase long- and short-term tickets via their individual accounts, as well as take care of other matters related to public transport, such as submitting applications, complaints, etc. In 2027, vehicles and metro stations will also begin to be equipped with new devices where electronic tickets can be purchased. Passengers will simply select the type of ticket and tap their payment card, phone or watch with NFC enabled, and their electronic ticket will be assigned to the selected payment method.
It is worth noting that it will still be possible to use the traditional City Card and paper tickets (with a QR code, not a magnetic strip as is currently the case). And there is one more practical innovation – both the app and the passenger portal will be equipped with a travel planner, which will allow passengers to easily plan their WTP transport, and the system will select the most convenient route for them.
In 2029, the installation of all system devices in 2,500 WTP vehicles and at all metro stations will be completed. Until then, two systems will operate in parallel – the old and the new.
