A coin that “blooms” in the sun. Mennica Polska surprises collectors

A silver coin that reacts to light and changes color has just been released to collectors. “Magnolia” from the Mennica Polska is one of the world’s first coin issues to use photochromic pigment – its floral motif reveals an intense pink color only when exposed to sunlight.

„Magnolia” kicks off Mennica Polska’s new coin series titled “Flowers of the Four Seasons” inspired by the changing nature. Symbolizing spring, it draws attention not only for its precision craftsmanship but, above all, for its visual effect, which transforms the way a classic numismatic piece is perceived.

At first glance, the coin looks unassuming—almost colorless, with a delicate milky hue. However, a moment in the sun is enough for a pink tint to begin appearing on the magnolia petals – ranging from a subtle to a deep, saturated shade. Along with it, the details of the relief become more distinct, as if the flower were gradually blooming on the surface of the silver.

“Magnolia” is a combination of mint craftsmanship and modern technology, and light becomes an integral part of the design, bringing out color and detail in a way that has not been present in our previous issues. We wanted the coin to tell a story of change –just like nature in spring. The magnolia flower literally “blooms” in the light, making every encounter with this coin a slightly different experience – said Katarzyna Skąpska, Marketing Manager at Mennica Polska.

The effect visible on the coin’s reverse is achieved through the use of a photochromic pigment that reacts to UV radiation. Depending on its intensity, the color on the magnolia flower appears and intensifies, then fades as light exposure decreases. This causes the coin to constantly change its appearance under various external conditions.

The obverse, in turn, is adorned with a subtle botanical composition—delicate twigs and leaves create a serene backdrop for the entire design, emphasizing the precision of detail and the purity of form.

The „Magnolia” coin is made of one ounce of pure silver of the highest fineness (Ag 999) and issued in a limited mintage of 500 pieces.
