The Labrador Retriever – the name of the breed comes from the Labrador Peninsula in Canada and the English verb "to retrieve" which is associated with the tasks that they perform while hunting. In the 18th century, it was used by fishermen to work on board of fishing boats. They were called the St. John’s dogs. The breed was first brought to Europe in 1820 by the Earl of Malmesbury who together with his son started breeding them in the UK. At the end of the 19th century, the breed was approved there as a hunting dog.
