The Mint of Poland, in cooperation with the Wisława Szymborska Foundation, has created a unique coin commemorating the 100th birthday of the outstanding Polish poet. This is not only a small work of art, made in silver with attention to every detail, but also the start of a new series of collector coins of the Mint of Poland “Polish female Nobel Prize winners”.

Superior craftsmanship

The unique coin depicts the poet's image in relief using a laser frosting technique. On the reverse, Wisława Szymborska is shown against a background of a fragment of the manuscript of one of her most recognizable poems – “Nothing Twice”. The coin with a face value of $1 was made from one ounce of pure silver in only 700 copies.

For more than 250 years of the Mint of Poland's activity, we have witnessed the greatest events of modern Polish culture and art. The collector's coin, which we created together with the Wisława Szymborska Foundation is a unique project, not only because of the extraordinary figure honored on it. It is also the beginning of the “Polish female Nobel Prize winners” series, in which, using the exceptional talents of our sculptors and designers, we want to inscribe in precious metals the stories of the most outstanding women of Polish literature, science and culture,” said Katarzyna Budnicka, CEO and President of the Management Board, Mennica Polska S.A.

Commemorating the legacy of an outstanding female poet

The coin is a tribute to one of the most important figures in Polish literature, Wisława Szymborska, on the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize winner's birth. It was made by talented sculptors with attention to the smallest details.

One hundred years ago – on July 2, 1923 – Wislawa Szymborska was born: poet, essayist, translator, winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature. Author of deeply philosophical poems, lover of literary games, master of irony, creator of surrealist collages, collector of old postcards and connoisseur of refined kitsch, fond of jazz, averse to pathos and distrustful of everything obvious. Her poems have been translated into more than 40 languages and she is the best-known Polish poet in the world. The collector's coin, issued on the Year of Wisława Szymborska established by the Polish Senate, is intended to remind us of the great Polish poet, whose poems still have much to say to us and do not lose their relevance,” said Michał Rusinek, President of the Wisława Szymborska Foundation.

This intriguing and unconventional project will satisfy not only collectors looking for products of the highest quality, but also lovers of poetry. This silver mint masterpiece comes with
a poetic certificate of authenticity, while the whole is packaged in a in a decorative case of non-accidental color - the poet's favorite shade of red.
