Ladislaus Jagiello (1386–1434) adopted the monetary system introduced by Casimir III the Great (1310-1370) with minor changes. He resigned from striking the largest silver coin – the grosz, and based his currency on a less valuable half-grosz. In addition to this, he preserved in circulation the quarter-grosz (also known as the small kwartnik), and a commonly used denarius (which had been already debased in weight and silver content). Since his reign, the system based on a low-value currency was to be in place for the entire century.
